Hong Kong's flag carrier, Cathay Pacific Airways, has taken the extraordinary step of grounding its entire Airbus A350 fleet for inspection following an unprecedented engine component failure. The incident, which occurred on flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich early Monday, has led to the cancellation of 48 flights and is expected to cause significant disruptions to the airline's operations.

The failure, described by Cathay Pacific as "the first of its type to suffer such failure on any A350 aircraft worldwide," has prompted immediate action from the airline. In a statement, the company said it had "immediately brought this issue to the attention of the aircraft and engine manufacturers as well as our regulators."

As a precautionary measure, Cathay Pacific has initiated a fleet-wide inspection of its 48 A350 aircraft. The process is expected to take several days, with a number of aircraft remaining out of service during this period. The airline has already identified several engine components across multiple A350s that require replacement. Cathay Pacific has confirmed that spare parts have been secured and repair work is underway. Despite these efforts, the carrier anticipates continued disruptions to its flight schedule in the immediate future.

The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department has been notified, and Cathay Pacific is coordinating closely with Airbus and Rolls-Royce, the engine manufacturer, to address the issue. While the full extent of the disruption remains unclear, the airline has promised to provide regular updates to affected passengers and offer alternative flight options where possible.

This incident comes at a challenging time for the aviation industry, which is still recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. For Cathay Pacific, one of Asia's premier carriers, the grounding of its A350 fleet represents a significant operational hurdle that will test the airline's resilience and crisis management capabilities in the coming days.
